    Default Turbo Charger Failure?

Today on my home from work I heard a noise from the engine of my car. It could only be explaned as a "popping" sound.
After this happened I now hear an increased sound (whirring)from the engine bay, front drivers side. The sound increases with the engine RPM and then almost stops at idle. There is a loss of power, but not too severe. I have no warning lights on the dash, and the coolant temp etc is all OK.
I took a look at the car late this afternoon but was not able to see anything obvious.
I will remove the bumper etc tomorrow to take a look and make sure that there are no hoses split, or anything similar.

    A couple of questions,
Could the turbo charger be blown?
Can I remove the charger myself to see if it is damaged?
If I take it to the dealer, will they be able to fault read it and tell me the problem?

Sure that there are more questions etc, but cannot think of them right now.

    Thanks in advance.

It does sound like a hose has popped. Vx may be able to let you know of any loss of vacuum/pressure etc, but i would have a good look at all the pipes first myself. It would prob save you a small fortune if one was split.

surprised that you have no warning lights on ???
i owuld have thought a split hose/ cracked pipe would put you into lhm?

and to answer a question yes - you can remove the turbo and inspect yourself - several members on here have done this -but the first thing to do would be to pop the bonnet open an have someone else rev the engine whilst you (H&S being very careful) pop your head in to try and identify the location of the source of the noise - then take it from threre

if all hoses and clamps are ok you can remove the hose to the turbo and you can inspect the turbine for bearing failure hold the turbine and check for lift and end play, there should be hardly any movement the turbine should spin freely with no noise.

I should have given more information in my first post. My car is a 1.9cdti, am I correct in understanding that the turbo charger is built into the exhaust manifold?
If this is correct, could a hose of still have blown off?
I removed the front bumper this morning and had my wife increase the throttle speed, but could not see anything obvious.

    Thanks again.

Talking Intercooler was split (see photos)

Well after pulling the front of the car apart I found that the intercooler had split on the bottom left corner. Should have known this when I removed the bumper and saw all the black soot/dirt on the inside.
So will now order a new intercooler, does anyone know where is the best place to get one?

    Thanks for all the help

Having problems getting hold of one to fit my car.
The main dealer wants £178 inc VAT. Does this seem a good price?

    FlatheadFordV8

I looked at this and called the guy, He said it would fit my car, but I will not receive it until Monday. The local dealer has them in stock, so for the sake of a little extra, I think that I will go with them.
    Thanks for looking for me
