    Exclamation Alternator upgrades??

Righto.....Im struggling to power my jbl14001 amplifier using the vectras standerd charging system.

I have done the big 3 upgrade and I am now looking at upgrading with a liesure battery in the boot.

The system is currently pulling 1500wrms.

Before i battery upgrade....Are there any alternators i can fit that would fit without too much modification.>

Maybe ones from vauxhall vans or other engines?

    My engine is a 2005 '55' 1,9cdti 120 8v

Am i right in thinking that its standerd alternator is 105 or 120 amp?
So what is there better than this?

Fit a second battery, but don't use a leisure battery - at 1500w, you'll be pulling 125A continuously which is way too much for an ordinary leisure battery - they may be good at deep discharge but always at an amp-rate under 10%, preferably under 5%, of the amp-hour capacity - where are you going to find a 1250-2500Ah battery? Use a marine battery, eg Numax CXV, with as high a CCA/MCA rating as possible (MCA is always CCA x1.25) - this will handle high current drain much better.

With the proper second battery, the standard alternator will probably cope although a gently-driven autobox will struggle because the engine revs are always kept low.

CCA is the max amp it can give out for a peroid of time. If i get a battery caperble of 900~CCA but its only 44ah...then it will provide plenty of power for a quick play.

It will discharge the current quick enough for a dump but will run out of steam playing full tilt very quickly.

If I get a liesure battery with 110ah but with a CCA of 350 it will still provide plenty enough power for a big draw of current. And play for alot longer.

Remember I will still have the alternator attached to this.

Regarding the alternator.....eventually I will be upgrading again, again, again and again.

So some where along the line i Will end up with a good few batterys in the spare wheel hold but still a 100amp alternator which will charge them. But will take a rather long time,

most of the people with big systems on the audio forum I use have upgraded there alt to 220amp and higher.

Also if I get a big alternator under the bonnet it will save me having to have a battery in my boot.

If 2 very good batterys are going to cost me £300. I can get an alternator of ebay cheaper.

Would i see much difference going from 105/120 ( anyone know what mine is) going to 140amp...Im sure you could get one on ebay around £150 used..

Although £150 seems expensive for 35, maybe 20amps.

Is there no other alts of different engines, models etc etc
