Default Rattle noise from rear of underside

    Hi,

Long time viewer, first time poster.

I've got a 2008 Vectra which on Friday went in for a thermostat and new handbrake as it was clunking.

Now, I'm afraid I have no more info on 'fitted new handbrake' and exactly what they mean by that.

However, tonight I was driving with my window open and noticed a rattle noise from the rear of the car which is from the underside of the car I believe. It is worse over rough roads and bumps, drains etc.

The noise is what I would imagine a loose aliminium plate on metal to sound like when its jolted etc. Like the screws were loose of something.

It is likely this was caused by something they did and am curious as to what. Does anyone have an opinion as what it could be?

I'm going to take it back but I'm concerned to drive it unless anyone thinks its something harmless.

Possibly the heat shield above the exhaust. I think it needs to be dropped to replace the handbrake

Many thanks. Interesting. So, if I crawl underneath, I guess the plate is near the exhaust pipe? I could probably push it to check if its loose and maybe even tighten the screws myself? or am I way off base here

It's such a pain to take it to the dealer again with work etc. Not pleased with them at all.

Yeah you can't miss its. its a corrugated aluminium sheet that protects the body from the exhaust

The heatshields under VX cars are not secured very well
One of the first things I do is remove the original nuts and insert a large washer, then replace the nut

In most cases the heatshield simply becomes lose, see it on VX cars quite a lot

Well, the sound it makes seems like this could be it. Ok, thanks a lot for your help.

I guess the problem is if I do miss it and can't find it and have to take it to the dealer, it could drop off causing damage. I'll have a look in a bit and see what I can find.

Ok, I checked and all seems ok. However, I think I found the problem. There is a metal thin ring around the disc on the rear wheel which makes the same noise if I tap it. The other wheels don't show this problem.

Any ideas? Safe to take to the dealers or should I insist on a pick up?

Haynes manual suggests that you have to remove the exhaust, to remove the heat shield, to get at the handbrake operating rod & equaliser bar.....is this what you have found...or can you get to it without removing the exhaust????? I want to lubricate the clevis pins and the handbrake lever end above the heat shield but it look like another b*****d of a job to do on the car......cheers

I don't know. It was done by a dealer.

Will be slowly driving it the 15 mile trip there tomorrow to have a good moan and make sure they fix it.

In case anyone is interested, I took it to the dealer today and they found a stone resting in the bottom of that plate that sits behind the disc.

    Problem sorted.
