just about to connect up my dab box to my cdc40 just wondered if the brown cable coming from the dab unit is negative and the red is 12v live?

If the wire is plain brown (no stripes) then this is indeed ground / Chassis / Earth
Red is permanent 12 volt supply and Black if you have one is for ignition live.
i have a red and brown cable which will be 12v live and earth. then theres green/white twisted together which goes to the display plug and 2 black cables which have 2 wires inside them which are connected to the ones on the cdc40 plug.
right your wires are as follows : -
green - to GID display pin 17
white - to GID display pin 18
red to +12 volts
brown to 0 volts / ground
green with brown stripe to CDC40 pin 31
blue with red stripe to CDC40 pin 32
unknown colour (shield) to CDC40 pin 38
hope that helps
note there are two shields that are linked together and then run to pin 38!!.
one from each black shrowded pair.
the red goes to fuse FI1 - 20 amps at the end of the dash. same as the radio.
