    Default What do I do?????

    Hi guys,

Dare I say this, but I'm contemplating trading in my beloved GSi, for a 1.9 CDTi....or maybe a 3.0 V6(!?)

Oooh, I think there's gonna be a reaction from some peeps on this one but my heart says keep the ol' girl and my head says get the diesel.

Basically, my wife is on maternity leave with our second daughter (1st daughter is 2.5 years and the other is 7 months).

Now, I'm trying to get everything in place whereby my wife has the opportunity to stay at home rather than go back to work. I've cut down just about every expense possible and the only thing left considering now is changing the car!

I only do about 6000miles PA which is nothing really, however 95+% of the journeys we do in the car are 'to the shops and back' and so the average mpg I get is around 22mpg. I can easily get 36mpg on a run on the motorway which is pretty good, however by going over to a 1.9 (150) I've made a best guess and worked out that I'll save around £40pcm. - Not a massive amount but it all adds up! - Of course it'll be cheaper car insurance and road tax too!

Ok, I'm trying to get an idea of how many miles I'll get out of a tank of fuel.

The trip computer in my car is weird. We all have 13.1 gallon tanks. Yet filling my car to the brim to when the MFD screen shows the 'low fuel' coming on (range 32miles), the 'fuel used' reads around about 9.5 gallons - meaning there should be about another 3.5 gallons left (77 miles)!!!! Then when filling the tank up takes about 44 litres (around 9.5 gallons). My car is also set up for GB Gallons too.

    QUESTION - to all (especially 3.2 V6, 1.9 (150's) and 3.0 V6 CDTi's)

I reset my MFD settings each time I refill.

    1. How many gallons does your car state it's used from a FULL tank, to when the low fuel screen is displayed?

2 Also, how many miles to a tank can I expect for a 1.9 150 and 3.0 V6 CDTi for mainly STEADY urban driving?

Looking at other threads, I reckon the mpg are as follows (please correct if I'm wrong!!!!)

    1.9 (150)
    Urban 38mpg
    Combined 42mpg
    Motorway 54mpg

    3.0 V6 CDTi
    Urban 30mpg
    Combined 34mpg
    Motorway 42mpg

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading!!!!

If i were in your position i'd chop the GSi in straight away..

All i can tell you is our CDTI150 at work gets about 50 mpg on the motorway and about high 30's round town..And dare i say it..

there isn't too much difference in driving them..

The CDTi is a great engine.. but just not my cup of tea..

Your figures are about right matey. But as you only do 6000 miles a year I'd stick with the GSi. OK you'll save on the tax and maybe the insurance but is a saving of £40 on fuel worth loosing that petrol V6 growl?

Are you desperate for a newer car?

Otherwise look at dropping to a 2.2 DTI engine or something on an early 02 or 52 plate?

Then you have some cash in the back pocket for a while. Once little'un is a tad older and both working again you can jump up to a V8 instead

Figures are about right on the 1.9 CDTi engine. I love mine, nippy little git.

    Cheers buddies.

There are 3 things stopping me at the moment!

    1. I'll miss all the toys of the GSi if I get the SRi.
    2. I'll miss the styling of the GSi if I get the Elite.
    3. I'll miss the sound of the V6 and it's near silent running.
    OK, so there's 4 things.....
    4. I'll have to change my Username! lol.

Getting an Elite and 'blinging' it up defeats the object of saving money on a diesel(!) Doh!

Why don't VX do the same spec of the GSi but with just a different engine!!!

You could always convert it to LPG if it's out of warranty

    Funny you should say that....

I was thinking about that, but my warranty runs out in a few days time, and so think I'd prefer to pay a few extra grand and get a newer (diesel) car with warranty, therefore piece of mind etc, that's if I decide to bite the bullet.

Do you guys know how many gallons your cars use from full to the warning message and how many miles have you done by the time you get this message?

    Cheers fellas

    Grant,

How much will changing your car to 150 cdti cost you, or will you see some money back if you chop it in?

If its going to cost you to change it there may be little benefit at the end of it.

If you are going to change to a diesel, i'd say the 150 would be ideal.

You're not going to hear the growl of the 3.2 V6 or the 3.0 diesel as you're ears'll be ringing from all the crying! : )

I'd say it'll probably cost me about 3K to change to a diesel, but that will give me new warranty etc.

It's around the time I tend to change cars, i.e. while my existing car still has some value.

It's an 03 GSi with less than 15K miles on the clock!

i get around 460 before the light comes on, but that's abit out due to the performance box being fitted.

and the 31 miles range comes on when around 10 gallons have been used, not exactly sure about this though, just recalling from memory.
