Default Thinking of getting a "proper" jack

After struggling for years either driving up onto blocks, or using the car jack, I think the time has come to get a proper jack.
    Two things :
    1. Can anyone recommend one?
    2. If using a trolley jack, which points on the body should you use?

only an amateur myself , but got a trolley jack and axle stands from wickes about a year ago for less the £15 for the lot. I have used these many a time and seem fine to me.

Same jacking points apparently. I was going to make a small adapter with a block, the same size as the head of the supplied jack, to fit into the hole at the jacking point. But when I had the tyres done recently he just used a trolley jack directly under the square cups on the 'sill' and it worked fine.

I picked up a 2 ton trolly jack, one of those things with wheels you lay on to get under the car, 2 x axel stands, 2 x wheel chocs (<---Spelling!?) in a box set from Halfords for £40. I thought it was very reasonable.

I use a trolly jack. I bought it from Halfords several years back. In fact I have Two trolly jacks, makes changing more than one wheel around a whole lot quicker. Or when removing them to give a good clean.

I had a "2-tonne" trolley jack that would protest like a trapped pig when lifting the Siggy, so sold it on eBay to a guy who only wanted to use it on a Saxo. I replaced it with this 3-tonner from Machine Mart, and also got the 3-tonne axle stands shown as "related items" on the same page. They work a treat:
