    my car is going a hell of a lot faster with this cold weather is it just me

    thought i was going crazy noticed this as well also mpg is down a bit is this normal using more fuel in a deisel in the winter and lower mpg not noticed this before first deisel with trip computer.

    Well to elaborate without getting too technical....

    Colder air = more dense air (more air molecules per volume of air)

    More dense air + normal fuel mix = bigger bang in cylinder = more power in each 'bang' piston stroke

    More power per piston downstroke = lower engine revolutions per minute required to achieve same power to gearbox as would be required with warmer (less dense) air

    Additionally, add in more water molecules per volume of air and you have fractionally more bang than with dry(er) air

    HOWEVER....

    In reality the difference between cool air and warm air is pretty minute and barely noticeable in the average car engine


    (Sheesh! I have a nasty feeling I was actually listening during the powerplant performance bit of me pilot licence.... shocking !!)

    Colder air = more performance = less mpg = more overtime to pay speeding fine :-)
