    Thumbs up Car Servicing??

    Hi Everyone,

Most of the service tasks can be done by yourself such as changing the engine oil, replacing the air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, etc. So why donít people carry out servicing themselves and thereby save money instead of paying the local garages / dealership to carry out these uncomplicated tasks?

This is the question I am posing for my university research and hope to come up with a product design solution at the end to encourage userís service their own cars.

Guessing that most of the users on the forum probably carry out their own servicing, then please do share your experience in what prompted you to service your car, by yourself in the first place? What prevented you from starting earlier, if you did take your car for servicing at garages/ dealerships beforehand?

For those that do not service their own cars, please do share your thoughts and feelings of why you donít.

    Your feedback is greatly valued.

If you dont have a garage or suitable place to work it would be very difficult. Getting the right parts can be difficult, the fear of making a mistake, the warranty, the expertise, the tools ...

Service my own car as it keeps costs low and i have full control of all parts and materials used. As long as your competent in your own work then why not, and the saving of money is the biggy. Labour is just to high now. The bad point is even if you keep receipts the service book isn't stamped and may decrrease the value when coming to sell. Also time is a factor if your busy and dont have it then garage can seem convienient. Depends what your priorities are. Time or Money!

I enjoy it when everything goes well. I do my wifes and both daughters services. There is a satisfaction of a job well done and money saved. At least you know the oil was changed properly, the correct grade went back in, the filters were changed etc. I always have my doubts when a garage does a service.

I've started to do my servicing only because I can't trust the local garages to carry out a good job (bad experiences encountered). Therefore that prompted me to do my own service and repair. The first time servicing my car was daunting but with help from haynes manual I managed to get it done. Now I service all my family car.

Time, effort, money and convenience come into it. Some people want a FSH for resale value. Garage seriving is req'd to maintain the 3-year warranty.

Servicing might be easy for mechnaically minded people, but I know people who cant put a new fuse in a plug.

Hell, even in the driving test you now have to open the bonnet and show the instructor where the dipstick is. Ironic...

Many people who own newer cars have to have the servicing done by a VAT registered garage using genuine parts to ensure their warranty remains intact.
