That'll be their 99 octane fuel - it usually comes out well in tests.

As well as the Millers, I'd also treat the tank to some Fuel Dri additive. Just in case. Water droplets can destroy a fuel pump, I've seen it. This product is also from Halfords. It will emulsify any water in the system. You can get water in the tank from condensation, particularly if, like me, you regularly run at low fuel levels. These VX engines do seem to suffer from soot and so use of better quality fuel, together with additives such as Millers, are likely to help.

Does the fuel filter also serve as a water separator too, like they did on older Vec B DTi ?

Might be worth draining the fuel filter by a little if this is the case. there was a drain screw on the bottom of the filter enclosure on Vec B 2.0 DTi cars.

Turns out that this may be a problem with the Air Flow Meter - was hoping it wouldn't be this considering how expensive they are to replace.

Yes it does - just the same as the Vec-B. In fact the fuel filter housing looks pretty much the same (the CDTi one is 'improved' to spin out even more water and also includes a water sensor to let you know when the water needs draining).

I've never got any water out of mine via the drain screw on the bottom - all opening seems to do is let air in and cause fuel to drain back into the tank, meaning that you've got to do turn it over a bit before it'll start next time.

I've never found any water in it when changing the fuel filter at 2 year intervals either. This is on bog-standard Tesco diesel as well - nothing fancy.

Ive been having exactly the same issue with my vec (04 SRI 2.2 Direct Petrol prefacelift), since i fuelled with V power shell fuel it has been having issues, have put a new tank of fuel in (esso 95 octane) and still having issues, will try upping the oil level and spark plugs to see if that helps, but i suspect water damage as i did drive through a large fjord.

Guys can i just say as a point of interest I actually drive a tesco petrol tanker delivering tesco fuel.I know some people have issues with "quality" but I can assure you that we take our tesco tankers into esso terminals and load from the same tanks that esso, shell, etc load from we all sit in a queue and take our turn we do the same in bp terminals,so make you own minds up I am just offering a bit of "inside knowledge".Hope this helps a little.

Doesnt suprise me in the slightest, but tbh, how would you allocate blame then if i were to file a lawsuit against a garage if every fuel provider loads in to the same tanks?

Normally if anyone is to" blame "as such you would go to the garage who would then pass your complaint to the fuel supplier.. same as any other goods,ie you buy a tv from asda it fails, you go back to asda who will eventually claim from lets say sony for example.
