    Default Engine temperature not rising?

Can anyone help with a problem that has come up on my 55 plate 1.9CDTI 150?
The engine temperature gauge has decided that it will not rise very much over the past month. It seems only to rise to about 70-75 degrees. Previously this would sit about 80-85 max. The fuel consumption has also dropped about 7mpg per 100miles .
I drive approx 30 miles a day and it takes 20minutes for the temperature gauge to move at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Could either be the thermostat or the temp sender, but a whole unit covers both items anyway - does your heater get hot pretty quick though..?

    Mine does the same too.
Would this cause the car to run low on power low down?

Move to a warmer climate would be my advice.

Colder these days (frost last night) and it takes longer to warm up and doesn't get as warm. Diesels normally take longer than petrols to warm up because they are usually heavier (more thermal inertia) and as they are more efficient less heat gets rejected to coolant and hence slower to warm up.

100 miles is not a far enough distance to accurately measure a change in fuel economy, BUt cars use more fuel when it's cold outside.

iv noticed a marked decrease in the needle position temp on my cdti but then again it does it every winter as the weather gets colder i can run 8 miles to work in the morning and the needle hasn't moved so nothing to worry about as long as you are still getting hot air through the vents

Just had exactly the same with mine.

If you really put your foot down, the temperature would rise to above 80, but then drop back to about 75 when you eased off.

Fitted a new thermostat, which was around £45 from Vauxhall, and temp now sits at 86 degrees.

Its not like the old style thermostats, it comes as a complete housing, with several connections and a temperature sensor.

If you have the CDC40 Opera, you can put it into test mode, and read the engine temp directly, so you know it is not the gauge.

Press and hold "Settings" until you hear a beep. Then press "BC" several times until you come to coolant temp. The test mode cancels once the engine is switched off.

    Hope this helps.

    thanks guys.
the temperature from the vents is the same as always but I am more concerned if it is related to the drop in consumption. I have lost about 70-80 miles per tank since this problem ocurred. This is the first time that the temp has fallen below the 75-80 mark since I bought the car three years ago and I know it is not because of the cold weather.

If the thermostat has gone then the engine will run colder and use slightly more fuel, so could answer the mpg query.
