Hi Guys hopefully someone can help.
I have a 2.0Dt1 on a 03 plate, i'm loosing a huge amount of coolant from the header tank, if i do a 10 mile trip i can loose nearly the whole tank full. I have changed the thermostat, header tank and cap. i don't think there is a propblem with the water pump as there is no rattle coming from it and the return pipe into the tank is flowing nicely. but i have noticed that air escapes the header cap as if there is too much pressure in the system.
The heaters run hot when the engine is at fast idle or if i'm driving. but when the car is at idle the air goes cool.
I can't find any leaks in any pipes. there is no mayonase in the oil cap or on dipstick and there is no oil in the water.
I've flushed the whole system out today and added some rad weld ( last resort i think). I've had the car idling for a good hour and water seemed ok. took her up the A41 and within 2 miles the temp gage shot up to 100deg. again i lost all my coolant.
There was no white plume of smoke out of the exhaust so i realy don't think it's the head gasket, i have noticed the that the top of the rad on both ends is cold. so i'm thinking i have a huge Airlock.
When i got to my workshop i filled the header tank up with water again, and ran the car at fast idle for a couple of mins. the return pip was runing constantly then i had a couple of splutters and i think what was air came out , the water rose up a bit then droped down. i did this a few times and i think the air has gone. Toped the car up with water again and drove the 10miles home on the A41. got her to 70mph and everything seemed ok, heaters worked driving and at idle and the temp gage was at a constant 85. Just around the corner from home the water light came on again but this time i only lost about 10mm of water. If there is a airlock still how do i remove it as on the 2.0DTi there is no air screw on the rad pipes. i have tried filling the expansion tank with water and removing the heater matrix pipes.
I'm realy at a loss. if it is the head gasket i've been told it's a +£800 job , which i don't have. I've done loads of heads on my old fords when i was younger but havn't tackled a new deisel before, how hard is it?
Thanks for reading, apologies for the bad grammer and spelling ( not my strongest point)
Hopefully someone can help
