    Default Wheel Vibration - AAAAAARGH!

Grateful for any ideas on this one folks, here's the scenario:

    1. 1.8vvti sri (totally standard) - after 40000mile service by Vx, noticed vibe in steering wheel above 70, assumed wheel balance was out but didn't bother fixing cos new wheels on order.

    2. Fitted new wheels (235/35/19 ET35): vibration same. Noticed that the vibes are not resonant, (ie, come in at 75 then die off at 80) but constant above 70.

    3. Got wheels rebalanced, they were all less than 5g out, but got them perfect anyway - no change to vibration.

    4. Road test - noticed that at 68/69mph, all is ok. set cruise control, took an easy right-hand bend and the vibration kicked in (no change to cruise control). Also, once the vibe has started, it doesn't stop until I'm down below 60.

That's all the meaningful info I've got so far. I'm gonna take it back into Vx, but really would like to go armed with an idea of what could be wrong, so I'm really grateful for any ideas.

    Cheers folks

Mate, I had this exact same problem with Vauxhall, they balanced my wheels after my crash and it went like this:

    Crash
Got car back, vibration at 70mph - took car back - rebalanced
Got car back, still a vibration at 70mph but not as bad - took car back - rebalanced
Got car back, still a vibration at 60-70mph so took it to a local trusted garage, turns out Vauxhal had put counter balances over the old ones etc, the garage did a full strip of old weights and new ones on and took the car out and guess what...PERFECT.

I would take it to a garage thats trusted and has a good reputation! Its worth asking them if you can test straight after and then bring it back if a problem!

I thought it was tyres or even the brakes at one point lol, but no was just the wheels, I think they put the weights on the wrong side of the inside of the alloy, i.e. put the weights towards the front of the wheel instead of towards the back!

notoriously difficult to balance, some even recommend a specific balancing machine. Ironically it was a back street grotty garage that got mine **** on 1st time after both vx and one other left them with slight wobbles @ different speeds.

Could be caused by the brake discs, or by worn bushes.

I would really check the balancing first and get that checked out before going down that route.....I thought the same thing but I was very wrong!

A squeak is simply the brake pads vibrating, you need to clean then and put some copper grease on them, this is not related to your vibration bud

I remember years ago when I first started tuning, i actually reverted to having the front wheels balanced on the car, using a pretty nifty tool....not many of them about today. Also I remember that the difference in weight of a locking nut actually affected the balance !!! yes its true......the bigger the rim the more any imperfection is felt........try taking the locking nut of temporarily and using a standard nut to trial... you never know sometimes its the simplest sounding things..

Good point, cheers. Had a chat with a reputable tyre dealer and we're gonna thrash the balancing thing out on Sat, with runs up the motorway 'til we've either solved it or ran out of ideas. Good point with the locknuts too Si, we'll try that too

    Cheers
