    Default Notchy 3rd Gear Automatic

    Vectra 1.9 CDTi 150 Automatic

The last 2 days I have been noticing when the car is going up the gears 1st to 2nd smooth, 2nd to 3rd bit notchy, 3rd to 4th smooth and all OK up to 6th.

This only seems present whilst going up the gears.

Any ideas what this could be, Ive owned the car for nearly 2 years and not encountered it before.

Cheers in advance for your advice/replies.

What mileage has the car done?

First thing to always check on the auto box is the fluid condition and level. IIRC, VX recommend changing the fluid every 4 years or 40k miles (on the 5 speed AF33) but this is often overlooked even by VX stealers for whatever reason.

On my 2002 GSi, albeit with the 5 speed AF33 auto box, the fluid change was missed at 40k miles when I bought it at 57k miles. I then changed it myself at around 62k miles and the shift smoothness definately improved.

    I have an pre-facelift Y30DT with AF33 auto box.

The local dealer told me that the oil for my box should be
    Opel nr. 93 16 03 93 / 19 40 771

Think the box takes about 3,5 ltr. in total

But I didn´t now that it had to be changed for every 4 years / 40k miles.

I´ll better get the oil changed soon then..

If it's the AF40, 6 gears, it takes aprox. 7 L., that can't be changed at once. You wil have to change the oil in 2 steps, both of them will release aprox. 2.8-3 L.:

Change 2.8-3 L., all the oil that the gearbox lets' flow, then put the same amount back in, drive the car for 60-100 miles, then change the oil again, all that gets out.

I did it like this. The first time oil was very black and ugly, the second time it was more red and nice.

It's the only way to change as much oil as possible out of the 7 litres.

If they won't, they would only change ~ 50% of the oil. There's no other way to change the entire oil, unless you open the gearbox. Anyway, it won't make you problem disappear.

OP: Start with changing the oil. At least 2 times, but preferably 3-4 times. In my case the dealer has not changed ATF-oil at all, and if they had done so, they would only change it once, so only 3-3.5 litre. It will help with only 1 change, but then you should change at least as often as you change your engine oil. This is something they will not agree at your dealer, strange enough. An auto-box is the most sophisticated clockwork in your car, and it costs £££ o change/fix it. My local auto-gear specialist claimed that 90% of all autogear breakdowns are caused by worn oil and its slug, and they loves that some car brands sells their cars with autobox "filled for life", like Volvo does on their S60 (AF33 5-speed tiptronic). It gives them alot of good work The gear-box rely very much on the oil, and the Aisin Warner boxes are known to be pretty sensitive to what oil you put in.
From factory I would belive your gearbox has a GM ATF oil. Earlier they used Dexron III oil of high quality, and today you will get Dexron VI, still very good quality. But the OEM producer Aisin Warner does not specify this oil, only GM does! They (Aisin) want you to use a JWS3309 oil, who is not an syntetic oil, as the Dexron VI is. The JWS3309 is covered by some brands ATF-oil and Toyota sells this oil pretty cheap (Aisin Warner is used also in Toyotas, and many other brands). So far I am not 100% sure if the Dexron III / VI is mixable with the 3309, so if you are not going to completely flush the oil (available at a autogear specialist), I would stick to the Dexron VI as VX sells you, even if its not the OEM recommended oil. As I know it is Fuchs who is making the oil for GM (at least here in Europe), and they in general make some very good oils. Fuchs also sells the GM ATF-oil, as "Titan ATF 6000", this I am told by my local Fuchs dealer. In my case my Opel dealer can give me the best price, both for ATF and the 5W-30 engine oil.
I have a forthcoming project to flush my gearbox the DIY-way, if I can figure out how to, in a proper way. If I do, Ill make a how-to for this

I just bought my valve body, payed 800 Euro for a brand new one, because I had 5-4 changing problems. The recommended oil is GM P/N 93165147. If you get this, you can't go wrong.
