Question 1.9 CDTi (150) sluggish performance

    Hi all,

My 55 plate has started over the last few days to be very sluggish under 2k rpm. 1st is pretty unresponsive, and even 2nd is really behind.

What would be best to check? 3rd injector wiring? Boost sensor? EGR valve? Anything else??

    Thanks,

    p.s. - it's done 66k

EDIT - This is about a month or so since I did the airbox mod. Would this have any bearing you think? Given that I've had a month without the issue.

Airbox mod should not have affected, unless you have somehow chuffed the MAF up, which i doubt.

Usual suspects to check firstly, are the EGR valve (how2 on here for cleaning), the boost sensor (how2 again), and also the injector wiriing mod (how2 again).

If none of those give you any joy, your ultimately looking at a manifold thats giviving up the ghost.

Is the swirl valve actuator arm connecting? Is there any free play in it up and down? If so thats a sign, along with there being pools of crappy oil and desposts around the top valves that the swirl arm mounts to.

My 4th on the right is covered in crap, and im getting smokey startups, along with poor fuel, and juddering.

Not had a chance to check that yet, but reading what I've read, I don't think it's that, I just don't have the symptoms.

It seems like the boost sensor and/or EGR......fingers crossed.

OK, just taken a quick look at the swirl valve actuator arm. When the engine is running, it should be moving yes??

    Mine is not

Sounds like the manifold has gone, this gives the same symptoms as what you have said.

Think you need a new manifold mate, the arm should be moving when you rev the car!

    Yeah,

VX quoted approx £220 for the manifold and about £180 for the actuator motor. And £365 for the labour to fit it.

I think I'll fit it myself. I've rebuilt engines before, so this will be a doddle in comparison. Off with the old and ancilliary parts, fit gaskets, refit.

    Voila.

Just thought have you tried to clean round the area (or move the arm free at all?)

Might just be clogged up a bit? Not sure if this is possible and would still get the manifold changed to be honest.

Good luck mate, do a how too whilst your there lol

I'll do my best for the How 2

As for the arm, it is fubar I am afraid, so no cleaning, and I don't think it's worth me doing the fix it for a quid remedy.....I just wouldn't have the confidence in the repair.

    OK, quick update.

I spoke to my local Vx dealer (Greenhous Hanley, Stoke on Trent), and asked about a goodwill payment due to the well known issue........they are only going to contribute 70%!! Result!! So I will be having them do the work, as the bill will only be £207, which is cheaper than I can buy the parts for!!

The proviso was that I had full Vx service history, which luckily the previous owner had the decency to keep up
