Only problem is, if they lose, then we'll all be paying:

To draw your own money from all "Holes in The Wall", wherever they are & whoever owns them.

Every direct debit paid, cheque written, account transfers etc.

All this even for accounts in credit. We are all forced these days to have bank accounts so we won't even have a choice in the matter, we can't vote with our feet by deciding not to participate & not have an account but go back to using cash instead.

That's in addition to the interest they make on accounts in credit. I can't see why there is a problem with charging for those overdrawn, especially when it's done without prior agreement. After all, one in that situation is borrowing money without asking first.

Perhaps if they do lose & start charging for everything, then it's time for the masses to object to having to have an account & demand that we can opt to be paid in and use cash again if we so choose. The whole financial industry needs to be made to get it's own costs under control too & that includes the massive wage bill they all have.

So very true! I get incredibly annoyed by the way banks just think of a figure and double it. My charges have gone through the roof since they fluffed it up and the 'credit' crunch kicked in. I for one would gladly take my wages in cash and sack the banks off all together as they cost me a fortune for something I'm forced to have through no choice of my own.

Oh and I'm not in any debt by the way but I still seem to get charged for fun.. I'd dare say it's even worse if you're overdrawn etc..

This is what is being said...

And if they win then they will think that they can get away with it and put charges up even more in the future (overdraft). This won't effect me because I don't go overdrawn but it could still damage others and out whole ecomony.

Glad I already squeezed £3.5k out of HBOS before they went on hold then. It's not all bad, RBS have drastically reduced their charges now.

I don't mind paying for a service so if they start charging for having an account then fine. I object to getting charged about £80 for going overdrawn by £5. Which has happened to me before.

I took a hit a few years ago when my balance went overdrawn by around £10, I was being charged £25(ish) a day until I pulled it back......

The thing is, it was their fault id gone overdrawn to start with because they'd failed to sort out my transfer correctly from my old account and the new account was left with no money and direct debits upto it's ears. I was NOT a happy bunny!
It took hours for one dept to talk to the other dept, both blaming eachother until finally I was paid back the charges, I still never had an apology.....

Well... looks like banks won and free accounts will remain... nothings been mentioned much at work?!?

Even tho staff i'm pretty much a fence sitter with charges, probably because i've had charges in the past... but the argument that it does not cost £25 in admin is totally irrelavant.

It does'nt cost 10p to send the small amount of info via text - but we pay it (look it up its like 0.001p)

Also parking fines!! - not even going to start with them...

Well done to all those that got there's back before the payout freeze...
