Springs.......

I like most of you guys on here have had a few broken springs on my vectra and have had them replaced at a local non vx dealership no worries.
I had my car in the local vx dealer this week regarding another issue and as a result they mentioned to me that my 2 front springs (the ones that have broken in the past) did not have a sleeve on the bottom where the spring sits. They said they could rectify this at a cost of £181, I asked was it a problem, they said no it was just to stop metal on metal.
My question is this, do many of you have these sleeves on, I am wondering whether the garage that replaced the springs on my vectra have missed the sleeve off by mistake?

Thatv sounds like a lot of money to put some sleeves on!

I think most of us do have the sleeves on, with them off it can cause a nasty clunking noise from the front.

There was no way I was going to pay that sort of money, just wondered if i needed to get back in touch with the garage that replaced my springs or just leave it. I have heard a clunking noise from the front drivers side very occasionally and I presume that is what is causing it? The only problem is these springs were replaced over a year ago....

Can't hurt to ask, its just knowing whether the old springs had them on to begin with as if they didn't the garage may not have known to fit them.

If they're what I think they are, they're just little rubber tubes on the very end of the spring.....

They're VX's "quick bodge" to fix a design flaw, in my opinion.

On my old springs they were worn through to metal anyway! I don't have any there now.

£181 is a joke, it should cost no more than the labour cost of having the springs changed!

100% of my clunking/boings from front springs have always been little bits of grit trapped near to the base coil and tends to make awful sounds, fiddle round with your fingers and flick out or get the hose in and wash out.
