    Default Dual Mass Flywheels...

Just after some info regarding dual mass flywheels.

Obviously we hear issues regarding diesel DMF's but do petrol models suffer the same kind of issues?

The reason I'm asking is my Z20LEH should have a DMF and I'm debating whether to fit a the standard DMF or take it out in favor for a solid lightened flywheel. As its still going to be an everyday car I'm not too sure which option would be best.

    Any advice??

Deisels need them due to the torque they kick out. I dont know if you can get away without one on a turbo charged petrol though.

I havent heard of any issues with the petrols having problems to be honest so maybe a dmf wouldnt be a bad idea??

Thats what I'm thinking, I don't really want the chatter etc from a solid flywheel and I rarely seem to see anything about petrol DMF's having issues.

tbh mines has been chattering for the past 3 years - although it is annoying. When they go is a matter of time. The downside as you say is they dont last long - as far as deisles are concerned but on the plus side they protect the gearbox from the dangerous torque spikes at low rpms - so the theory goes.

Yes, stick with the DMF, I know Courtenay fitted a solid version to a VXR and the car drove terrible.

Can anyone confirm if they have done a solid flywheel conversion as I've investigated this and its a cheaper option and obviously you dont have to worry in the future.......anyone actually done a conversion?

And if so, what are the proper results?

A customer of mine had a slipping clutch on his LER engine and I supplied him with a lightened solid flywheel with standard VXR clutch and this was his thoughts on it.

Had a bit of a drive and there is no slippage whatsoever! But the clatter is very noticable (loud at times), especially at idle and also under acceleration. Sounds more like a diesel. You rev it a little at idel and the noise stops and when the revs fall, the noise returns. Also there is a bit of a vibration coming through the steering wheel when it moves around (engage and disengage). Some may think there is something terminal with the car, mechanical fault which is what I thought of at first. Also with the lightness of the flywheel, you need to give it a bit more revs as she will stall if treated like a factory unit.
Me personally I shall be going for the dual mass lol.
