Default Power steering hard at low revs? what the..

    Hi All

I have Signum 2.2 Petrol direct design. Among over problems currently having, one of them is that the power steering doesnt seem to kick in at low revs i.e when trying to pull out of a parking space etc. What could be causing this? I am having the timing chain replaced Monday, i dont think this would have anything to do with the power steering but may as well get them to check it out whilst it is in. Anyone got any ideas about the steering? as i say, its only at low revs, when driving it is fine (although its bound to be easier then with the momentum ey?)

    Cheers guys

Sorry can't help with the steering problem.

However I have the same engine as yours in my 2004 2.2 Vectra Direct with 54,000 miles on the clock and was wondering why you were having the timing chain replaced. Is it something I should be considering from a preventive maintainance perspective or is there a problem/symptom I should be keeping a look out for.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hi Dave

I dont think its something that you normally have to replace at such low mileage, however looking on this website there has been alot of timing chain problems with these engines it seems.
How i found out there is a problem was that the car has generally been running as rough as a bag of spanners for a while but the garage couldnt find out why so i left it until something more obvious reared its head. Then, in the mornings when the car was cold, on start up i had a rattling/rubbing/ticking noise coming from under the bonnet but then vanished after about 5 mins of driving. This noise was never apparent when i took it to the garage so i left it with them over night for them to do the start up in the morning. The noise had become loud enough for the neighbours to start twitching curtains in the morning to see what all the noise was about.
Anyway, two different garages have said the timing chain needs replacing, its a bit of a strip down job apparently. Having it done monday so hopefully should be running good again.
