Angry Power Steering or Battery/Alternator problem ???

    Hi guys,
Monday night driving home, took a right turn and power steering failed (very heavy to turn wheel) and power steering light showed (steering wheel and exclamation mark). Stopped car and turned off engine. Tried to start again and car wouldn't start.
Waited for 10 minutes, car started and I was able to get it home on drive (200 yards away from home when I broke down).

I was told by a mechanic friend that it was power steering failure. I questioned that, as I didn't think that would stop engine starting up ... but him being the mechanic, I took his word and checked ... the fluid is full and doesn't appear to be any leaks.
He said today it's the power steering pump, and I should look into getting one...

Now, I had a problem with the lower pulley snapping on the auxillary belt a few months back (in another post on here I needed help on). He fitted the new pulley and put the belt back on himself ...

Basically, I think this is a problem with this belt (or tensioner), as I think the alternator is on this belt (???) and the power steering pump takes a lot of battery juice (according to other posts). (Sorry for my lack of knowledge, am a bit of a novice when it comes to cars).
I don't want to go wasting money on a power steering pump if it isn't that!! (and would that really stop the engine from starting???)

Could some of you please give me your advice ?

    Cheers guys.

Get the alternator checked, make sure its giving the correct 14.4v. If it is and the belt isn't slipping it kind of limits the options.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Angry update

Hi guys, thanks for the replies ... sorry for taking so long.
Just had a proper look (took wheel / air filter off).
Between the bottom 2 pullies, there is some kind of arm (sorry, no idea what this part is).
The lower part of this has snapped off it's original position (not sure if it was part of the main engine block and attached).
I have taken photos... hopefully someone will be able to tell from these photos.
Could anyone shed any light on this?
What this part is? Is it attached to engine block?
Also, if anyone can help or give solutions would be grateful.
    Cheers guys.

someone on here will get you a part number no doubt but its the airconditioning mounting bracket..they will/should understand what you mean, they will have some other jargon for it no doubt..make sure you get a new bolt to go through the tensioner too..i usually find that they had been overtightened onto the bracket..this causes stresscausing it to break..or they come slack causing excessive movement and it eventaully breaks off.
