Default Is my Veccy using too much oil?

I've got a 2003 3.2 GSi. I change the oil every 8k-10k miles but after about 5k miles the low oil warning comes on. From then on it uses around half a litre of oil every couple of months until I change it again. And so on again! The oil I use is the proper GM Longlife 5w30 Fully Synthetic. Is this normal for it to use this amount?

    Cheers guys & girls

How is it driven? Hard or gently? 1/2 litre over how many miles?

Does it use or lose the oil?

I don't drive it hard, just brisk. After about 5k miles the warning comes on, then every 1k-1.5k roughly after that until it gets changed. It's not loosing any, 100% on that.

It's probably within the oil consumption specification in the manual, BUT IMO it is excessive. Mine doesn't usually use any between 20K mile services (1.8 Petrol).

Oil consumption is affected by engine type, service regime, duty cycle, oil quality / type etc.

Other GSi owners may have similar consumptions figures.

How often and at what time (cold, warm, or hot engine) are you checking the oil level?

At what level does the warning light come on?

When you need to topup how much does it take and what level do you refill it to?

Typical use should be about minimum to maximum once every 10K miles
However as engine gets older this can increase
I found this on my previous X20XEV, up to 60K miles I never had to top it up, it was just getting to the minimum in time for the service
However from then on I had to top it up half way through services
The cylinder head was then reskimmed at 90K miles and the problem went away

I've done about 4k in my GSi now and not had to top it up once (hope the sensor is working!). Not sure what grade oil is in it at the moment but is soon to be on 5-30W fully synth so we'll see. Its only done 44k miles so not really expecting much oil consumption.

It could be poor quality oil that's vaporising too easily and being fed back from the crank case into the inlet manifold (as mentioned in the oil catch tank thread).

Failing that maybe try a higher viscosity oil? it's could be seeping up past a piston ring (which wear with age) and burning off. Take out the plugs and see if one looks a bit gunky.
You do need to think about increasing the viscosity as you clock up those miles on any car.
