Default Anybody work within the railway industry?

Just wondered if anybody on here worked worked within the railway industry.

With it being a pretty big industry it's amazing the number of people you meet who are linked to it in one way or another. I'm a signaller at York, dealing with all trains between Doncaster and Northallerton, including Wakefield, Leeds, Skipton and Ilkley.

My girlfriend works for netwrok rai on the Crossrail project, and I was looking in to the locomotive engineering maintenance side of things when I was expecting to leave the RAF earlier this year...

Will probably still go for that area when I ome to leave again in a few years...

I worked on the railway between 1991 and 1994
I started off with BR, went to a private company, then back to BR
At the time it was just about the only private company involved with BR, and all just before privitisation

Initially I was based in Aberdeen, but for the second stint I was based in Edinburgh (whilst living in Aberdeen)
I was working on the trains themselves
Started off as a conductor, then a relief conductor
Went to the sleepers for two years
At Edinburgh I was part of the CATS (Customer Action) team
This was a great job, as you never knew where you'd end up!
However at the time most trains were breaking down so we'd end up quite busy
The idea was to get to the broken down train then find passengers and assist them with contact and onward connections (and this was in the days without mobile phones!)
In most cases the train would be so late I'd miss the connection back to Edinburgh and so would stay at the nearest hotel to the station (typically York, Peterborough, or Inverness), then travel back "off duty" the following day (and get paid for it!)

I was then offered redundancy as I had been with them less than 2 years
I was aged 22 at the time, so took it as I knew I had a good chance of getting another job

I then went straight to BP
