i think most of the time it's to protect your reg number from unscrupulous people making up plates ( a bit harder now with new laws, but i suppose there's always around it) to do unlawful things with. no particular law though, as far as i know to washing out plates to put on sites.

To lessen the chances of crooks (ringers) from getting a readyful supply of valid registration numbers i.e. ones that have vehicles registered to them so that they can ring an identical model/colour car etc.

The same reason why when any cars that are being transported with number plates on them (be they used or new cars), you'll see the plates have been hidden with tape. Saw one just today.

I just don't don't want My plate in the public domain as such .... Risk of Cloning, being ID'ed by outside agencies etc.

Another reason for the hiding of the number, as I found out through the RS owners club, is to protect individuals who have been a little, shall we say, defensive over their mod's to insurance companies.

Some owners have a massive amount of mod's to their cars appearence and performance but tell the insurance companies the bare minimum so as to keep premiums down. Some of the companies are known to scour the magazines etc and then compare your "boasted" Tech Spec with the actual application made.

I think that almost all drivers do or have done something simailar, whether it be a set of after market wheels or a major engine upgrade.
