Default Signum Timing Chain and Full exhaust replacement?!!!! help

    Hi Guys

I have a 2004 Signum 2.2 direct Design (petrol) and have been having rattling, knocking noises (quite loud) in the mornings for the first say 7 minutes after driving. Plus the car generally doesnt tick over very well or run smoothly at all, in fact some days you can feel vibrations coming through to the pedals, steering wheel.
The garage couldnt find anything for ages due to the noise only being apparent first thing in the morning and have tried to find the cause of the general bad running but with no success. Anyway, i left the car overnight with the local garage so they had it first thing in the morning for the noise. They have said that the timing chain is f'd (apparantly there are two as well) which is causing the noise and the general bad running/ticking over of the car. They have told me its a major strip down and have quoted £600! They have also said if its not sorted soon and it fails completely i could be looking at £3k! Does anyone know if this seems right, or has anybody had the same problem. bearing in mind the car hasnt even done 50K miles yet?
Also, they have also said that the entire exhaust system is getting ready for replacement, it has rusted through the outer skin already. Anybody know how expensive this could be? its the Design model Signum so has the twin exhausts.
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated, this is all i need leading up to Christmas!
    Cheers

    Chris

Yes the chains can fail and do. The second chain isn't for timing and they hardly ever go wrong. The price sounds about right. I can put you in touch with a VX tech who does these on a weekend for about half the price, you need to get the car to him though and I believe he lives in the midlands. He might travel i'm not too sure but i'd imagine petrol costs would come into it. Give us a shout if you want his contact details, he's a member on here and also the Mechanic on the 2.2 forum (z22se.co.uk) and comes highly recommended.
