    Default R/H indicator cancelling

Armed with the knowledge gained from posts in this forum, I took my Veccie in to dealer today to have them look at the R/H indicator cancelling problem. I explained I felt it was dangerous, and that the information I had from this forum was that it is a very common fault, and required either steering position calibration or CIM replacement.

After going walkabout for an hour, I returned expecting the usual 'we can't find anything wrong, sir'. But pleasently surprised, I was told it needed a new CIM. Downside was they fitted one Friday, so it was out of stock.

So, waiting for a call when it's in, then they want it back for a couple of hours. Still less than 3 years old, so covered under warranty. (That's why I took it in now.)

Will keep you posted on the outcome, but anyone else with this fault should get it sorted, especially if the car is still under warranty. Not sure what the cost would be otherwise.

Not sure what they mean by CIM and im not sure how VX do this, but the optical sensor used by many cars for self canceling (basically they pass IR through a rotary disc with cutout holes and count the number of light pulses) can get bunged up with grease from the steering column and cause all sorts of issues.

I believe CIM is column interface module, or maybe information module. It is part of the CAN bus system. It's like an ECU for all the column switches, steering wheel controls, etc.

Steering wheel position is used in power steering control as well. It aids in the system working out the assistance to provide, in relation to the input the driver puts in, along with road speed etc.

Most are moving toward pure torque sensors now with the electronic PAS systems, thankfully

I believe you can adjust the angle the indicators cancel using tech 2.

There are two types of indicator flashes...touch/tap the indicator lever up or down to 'change lane' and get three flashes right or left, or push it up or down against resistance to get a continued flashing left or right to make a right or left turn which cancels the indicator when the steering wheel 'straightens up'....we found it strange when we forst bought the car, but have gradually got 'use to it'.
Sometimes the continuous flash gets confused when approaching & making a right turn into a minor road on a bend when you adjust your position to stop the front end of the car being hit by some t**t cutting the corner.....

Well chaps. Had the CIM replaced Monday, and driven for a few days to check if it has cured the problem. Have to say yes. The R/H indicators now do not cancel with the slightest wiggle of the wheel. So, anyone with the problem, definately ask the dealer to sort it.

On the subject of dealers, Thurlow Nunn in Norfolk seem really good, much better than Hartwells in Norwich who I have experience of too.

I assume they upgraded the software in the CIM when it was replaced it, as the steering had a different feel to it.

Thanks to previous posters who suggested it was the CIM, as I used that information to nudge my dealer in the right direction.

Yep, same issue I had way back and had a new CIM fitted. Been right as rain ever since. IIRC there was an issue with the earlier CIMs.
