Default Lost my clutch, first ever!

My car has always had an odd loss of power when trying to overtake
I reported it twice in 2007 but the dealership was never able to actually find a faulty component

Basically it was like clutch slip above 3000rpm :
Come down a gear, lift the revs, reengage clutch, floor it
However the revs would go straight to 4000rpm, then come back down down, then back up again
I was able to recreate this and demonstrate to the area technician, but he was unsure what the cause and suggested it was probably due to the gearbox being on the limit of the torque it could handle

However yesterday it starting doing it all the time!
So I revised the job on which the car was already booked in for today (crunchy offside brake)
Then last night on the M80 at Crowwood Roundabout I lost all gears, managed to coast to a parking bay
Prior to that the clutch was working perfectly, with the bite point at the expected level

Phoned the AA and was given the option of roadside repair or recovery, but chose recovery as the car is booked in for this fault to be looked at

Equally, quite glad this has finally gone permanent AND destroyed the clutch, and just 3 weeks before the warranty expires
Might finally find out what the issue is

Sadly, I doubt a courtesy car will be available, so looks like I will be arranging my own hire car
Equally, could be a few days...
I've driven nearly 500,000 miles in 4 cars and never had a clutch fail

Juat what sort of 'technician' was that? Did he think that the gearwheels would somehow slip over each other at high torque? Sheech!

Sounds just like a worn clutch. I suggest you find another techy!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    Dealership firstly inspected the clutch
The hydraulic control was found to be working correctly, this corrected the disengaged clutch
They then took it for a roadtest and initially thought the problem was solved, until they went to 3rd gear, when the clutch would not engage and suffered the same symptoms I had previously been reporting
On the way back they then also lost 2nd gear and had to crawl back in 1st gear, before the clutch went again, meaning they had to push it along the road!

The gearbox has only just come out
However the gearbox is a different story and it will probably need to be replaced
It would appear it overheated and damaged the clutch

The dealership has requested the area technician attend to inspect, so as to ascertain why there is so much damage to the gearbox and transmission components
Sadly this will leave me without my car until at least Wednesday (inspection plus parts)

I thought it was quite funny, but it would appeal to my dry sense of humour

m8internet, glad it at least happened before your warranty expires.

I suspect VX Retailer Warranties were hoping it was the clutch, as they claimed it was one of the few components NOT covered by my warranty
However I phoned them back after checking my policy and the clutch IS covered (one of their few policies that does cover "wear and tear")

Equally, if this claim goes ahead this would be the final one permitted under the policy, having now reached its maximum claim value limit
Any more after this, they will be declined, and car considered for "buy back" as outlined in the policy
I would probably not go that path, depending on how much the repair quote was
I have budgeted for servicing, repairs, and maintenance of £3000 over the next 12 months when the warranty expires
Anything left over will be used as deposit for next car in late 2010
