    Default GM To Keep Opel/Vauxhall

...So says a message scrolling along the bottom of the BBC 10 O'Clock news. Can't find any further details at the moment, but if it's true - WooHoo!

GM says it is going to "restructure" its European operations now it is keeping them. So don't get too excited yet - we all know what restructuring means in reality - plant closures and redundancies.

Hopefully by keeping it in GM management, the value of the UK plants will be better appreciated than they might have been by a buyer, but we'll have to wait and see.

I feel sorry for VX workers who must wonder just when they will finally know if they have a long-term future or not.

Opel and Vauxhall staff numbers are going to be cut no matter who ended up owning the company, there's simply too much production capacity in Europe. The value in being retained by GM rather than sold to Magna is the economies of scale of being owned by a car company and using platforms and engines across both sides of the atlantic; whereas Magna were going to have to beg for co-operation from other car companies so they could use their chassis designs, just like MG Rover tried to do in 2000 when they were sold off by BMW. Now, as back then, there's always the likelihood that other companies wouldn't be interested in sharing development with a competitor, and Magna may have found themselves unable to fund and develop new products.

Quite a good item on BBC Breakfast this morning, GM is hoping to secure the 4.5bn euros Magna was promised by the German government but if all goes well definately looks good for GM, Vauxhall and Opel. Obviously there will be restructuring, I think it was originally agreed 600 job cuts would take place at the two Vx factories through voluntary redundancy (600 too many) with Magna and hopefully this agreement will still stand if not be improved with GM. But let's not forget all the other companies, dealerships and individuals tied in one way or another to GM it's got to be good news for those as well as the future of the Vauxhall brand.

It's good news, because I had visions of VX selling off all remaining spare parts to some 3rd party and us owners getting the raw deal when it comes to spares costs.... Just like with Rover.
