Have you got the fault code, as this will identify the cause of the light coming on. If not you will need to get this code. There is a HOW 2 thread about reading the fault codes for free in the How 2 section, which worked for my car. Failing that do you know anybody who has a fault code reader, if not then its a trip to the garage for them to read it which will probably cost around £50

post up your engine details etc and guys on ehre will guide you more directly - if its petrol - like on mine - its likely to be the EGR valve which could be solved through a good clean (although mine hasn't been!) - there are guys on here who really know what theyre talking about so stick your car details up and I'm sur you'll get loads of help

I have a 1.8 as well and when my warning light came on VX changed the EGR to no avail, only had 11K on the clock, they had to change the whole exhaust system as the cat' had polluted the system, so they said, I did not care as it was FOC. Could be a Lamda sensor gone walkies. The one in the exhaust manifold (just in the front of the engine) and the one the other side of the cat must be in within the working envelope ie, the cat is performing as it should, if not, on comes the light. As long as it is not in the flashing mode it is OK to drive for a short while, but as above check codes.
