I own one and I know this official bulletin: "Transmissions with improved valve guides have been introduced in production as of transmission-no.: 06A3816480".

"06" stand for the year the gearbox was made,
"A" is the month it was build (A=January, M=December),
    "38" is TF-80SC model,
"16480" is the unit number of the manufactured month (it means it's the 16480th gearbox made in January).

Problems are usually caused by people not changing the oil every 50.000 km. Mine has 120.000 Km and I changed it for the first time last month. I bought the car at 119.000 Km.

Don't shy away from it just budget for an aftermarket warranty thats what I did after my autobox went south after 40000 miles and at £3000 inc fitting (covered by Vx) warranty is a must as well as service history although mine had that and I did the miles so knew it had nothing to do with the way it was treated just one of those things.

Vx auto-boxes are made by Aisin-Warner.... ie Japanese ... and same as the ones used in Toyotas.

They are generally very very reliable although as mentioned, an oil change every 50,000 miles is always good news. Quite often, any problems can be resolved with an oil change or a s/w update/refresh.

The gear changes themselves are a little on the primitive side. This is often more pronounced on the diesels due to the torque and turbo lag (this is why i went for the petrol model - personal preference though). Mid-corners and downhills can sometimes catch the box out. But 90% of the time it is good. Very good in fact.

I have a 55 Reg, 2.2 Direct Auto (petrol). I've had many many automatic cars and I'm happy with my Vectra Auto. I just did a 500 mile trip yesterday and averaged 39mpg. Not bad.

    Hope that helps.
