Default give me some ideas about aftermarket warranties please

following on from my other thread about my troublesome 2.2 direct, i was wondering about aftermarket warranties. my car was bought with a warranty, and this paid for the first cam chain failure and fuel pump demise, but like a dope, i declined the opportunity to renew this a couple of months ago, [i wasn't working and could ill afford £350].
    but let's put this a little...er...theoretically.
a friend of mine has a car that has been a bit unreliable, and may have a pre existing conditon, something maybe like, his airbag light is on, he doesn't trust the car any more. his wife still likes it, and it does the job and isn't a bad drive when it's working ok. it's fully serviced etc. if he was to take out one of these warranties, at a similar cost, and he were to claim for the airbag after a month or 2 - what would happen? likewise, if the fuel pump failed again, or the damn timing CCT failed again, would the warranty company call it wear and tear?
he's thinking something like this is cheaper than trading the heap in and losing £2k...

Don't rely on the company just paying out.

If you read the small print in alot of them there are plenty of get out clauses.

One being if head gasket goes they will not pay for having the head skimmed.

They also won't pay for the costs of diagnosing the problem/ stripping down!!

I have one with my Signum, supposed to be any number of claims, upto the purchase price of the car.

Oil cooler failed on mine, they would only pay 4hrs for its replacement, which is ok but this doesn't allow for any flushing of the system, however the amount they paid out for the air con pump replacement easily covered the cost of parts and labour. Luck of the draw

Mine is currently sitting with gearbox out waiting for an engineer to confirm the box is shot, so guess i'll have another arguement about the replacement cost of that, have a niggling thought they will say the cooler failed, we will pay for that but not the box!

I am with warranty direct and no issues so far as not had to use them but my mate who recommended them had wheel bearings replaced when they got noisy before they failed no problems with them and several other items that we might consider wear and tear and mine is the main dealer warranty i.e. I can choose to have it fixed by Vauxhall if I want. These guys also cover wear and tear check it out.

    I was with Warranty Wise
The reason I chose them was the policies are underwritten by Lloyds
I chose a policy that allowed me to take the car to a main dealership
At the time they also had tyre insurance, which I added for "free"

Just be cautious of terms like "wear and tear cover" as they only pay for 50% of the claim AND only the parts that have failed due to wear and tear

Equally, although the policy says they will pay the agent direct after an accounthas been setup I found this was not the case
I paid for the first claim and was reimbursed two weeks later
I then contacted them to ask if the account was setup, but was advised they had stopped doing this
My next claim was a failed EGR pipe, again I had to pay myself and claim the costs back

The policy was also limited to 5 tyre claims in 3 years, so I used them all up!

I'm with Warranty Direct and have claimed for the following with no problems.
    Front spring
    thermostat housing
    wheel bearing
They are always good on the phone and they take about 2-3 weeks to send cheques out
