    Default AM Radio interference

First post on this site, so please be gentle with me

When on AM, my radio suffers from a very loud buzzing interference that is related to road speed. When stationary, there's no noise. When "creeping along", the noise begins as a few clicks, which then increases in frequency the faster I go. Anything over 30 mph and I can't hear the radio content at all, just a high pitched whine that drives me mad.

FM, CD and Tape is fine. It only happends on AM.

Has anyone idea what could be causing this and more importantly, how to rectify it? Thanks.

    Default AM radio interference

I posted this thread somewhere else, but it seems to have disappeared.

When tuned into AM, my radio suffers from very bad intereference which is related to my road speed. When I'm stationary, everything's fine, but as I gain speed, I get a clicking at VERY low speed, but then this increases with frequency as I gain Speed. At anything over 30 mph, I can't hear the radio content at all, since the intereference is then a high pitched whine that drives me mad.

Occasionally, when I drive over a bump, the intereference goes, but then comes back as soon as I go over another bump. It appears that there's a bad connection somewhere.

FM, CD and Tape is fine.

Does anyone know what the cause of this is, and more importantly what's the cure?? Thanks.

i had a slightly different problem, but it meant i could only receive MW in certain parts of the country, and mostly not at all, just noise. Vauxhall fitted a new aerial base which sorted it out, and reception across the UK is now excellent.

AM is very easily upset by electrical noise. It could almost anything in the car, normally the suspects are the alternator, heater fan and windscreen wiper motors. From your description it would sound like a loose connection if it goes away if the car gets a jolt.

AM radio signals can be severely disrupted in large urban centres by metal structures, tall buildings and sources of radio frequency interference (RFI) and electrical noise, such as electrical motors, fluorescent lights, or lightning, even internal electronics in the vehicle can cause additional interference becuause AM is so poorly moderated any electrical interference is amplified as there is very poor supression
which is why most music is now broadcast on FM and DAB and not AM seems to host more TALK based radio shows....

there will be very little you can do
