I'd like to do that MPG as well mate..

NRGuk.. sounds about right to me..

We took my fathers 150 CDTi from south beds to the solway firth and back on tuesday ( for work)..zeroed everything outside GSi towers and set off.. it was a 4 3/4 hour run each way plus two 1/2 breaks.. Da#n thing ate the miles without eating the diesel..

figure from trip computer..576 miles, average speed 72mph , consumption 49.8mpg..

If i'd have taken the GSi it'd have been 28mpg..

Yup, seems about right, do a check by refuelling and checking that way too as the trip comp is not always exactly accurate. On a run i get over 600 miles to a tankfull depending on how hard (or gentle) i drive.

    Talking 1.9 CDti 16v

On a recent trip around Scotland I averaged 51 mpg (varied driving, heavy traffic around Edinburgh and Glasgow, better on the A roads out of towns), I think if I really tried I could get an average of 55 mpg on a similar trip if so inclined. I like to enjoy the roads sometimes when the circumstances allow though.

Longest milage between fill ups was 630 miles, the fuel light made me nervous and I gave in, probably still another gallon in reserve maybe?

I think that there are about 2 gallons left when the fuel light comes on !!

I have been keeping a record here:

    http://rikkiola.co.uk/stuff/other/fuel.xls

(the deviations from actual and trip are due to CR1)

    Default Fuel consumption

Sounds pretty good to me - 1.9 CDTi 16v and I'm averaging about 45.5 mpg overall, but it's been down to 41 on losts of short trips and up to 50 ish on long runs.

These are all calculated figures noting quantity and mileage at each fill and using a spreadsheet - the trip computer always gives a figure about 2 mpg better than my calculated figure.

Question - with these engines is it more economical to keep the revs down (say below 2000 to 2500 rpm) with very light accelerator pressure and let the torque do the work or better to push it a bit harder with more revs and make the turbo work harder? Any ideas?

Higher revs in a 16v engine can actually be more economical due to breathing efficiencies. (In my previous Vec B (2.0 16v petrol), according to the computer it actually used less fuel cruising at 80 than at 70)
