Default 3.0 cdti v6 pre facelift

    Hi all,

    just a quick one.

My dad is looking at a 3.0 v6 cdti pre-facelift 2005 auto estate and is wondering what the major pro's and con's are?

Any real bad things about this motor? any reason why we shouldn't touch it with a barge pole?

    cheers all, Tom

My V6 CDTI Auto was perfect until it turned 100,000 miles, then it started smoking heavily and became very expensive.

My advice would be to find one with low mileage and a good service history.

Other than that they are great, the V6 CDTI is very good with the auto box.

not i know of had a sri for two years never with a problem but mine was a manual so can't help with gearbox reliability sorry. easily got 40 + on a run but a little thursty round town but when you drive and hear it you wont care. cause of the drag from very low revs are great to drive. why i got another in facelift form.

Great motor, but as said VERY expensive if it goes wrong. I just chucked away nearly £2000 for repairs and maintenance...

the 19 cdti aren't trouble free either and can cost alot of money if you buy a problem one. just take it for a long road test and drive it hard and soft and try every button, i wouldn't have any other engine under a vectra

    As above
You have the usual Vectra niggles; electrical, suspension, air con, etc

However the engine is virtually bomb proof, compared to other GM group engines (all my previous ones have got to 70K miles and suffered permanent faults that could never be fixed)
Servicing should be 2 years / 30K miles, but the service indicator rarely goes past 20K miles
Servicing is little more than an oil and filter change, visual inspection
You can stick with the GM oil or if out of warranty go for any synthetic oil

The cambelt can easily be left to 100K miles, but it will cost you the best part of £500

The only other major concern is at 4 or 5 years old (doesn't seem to be mileage lead) when the SCVs may become blocked
This is a 10 hour job, typical quotes for cost is £900 to £1500
My dealership managed it in just under 9 hours at a cost of £850
However now that it has been done once it should be cheaper next time as the EMS update won't be required, and they have experience of it as well
Equally, if carried out at the same time as the cambelt change then it should almost half the labour cost of the entire job
The SCV itself costs about £200

Sadly the brake pads are over priced, at £150 fitted
So look at brake pad and disc kits
Fitted they are just under £200

Tyres will last about 10K miles per axle, swapped rear to front as they wear
Make sure you use XL rated tyres AND buy the best you can afford

Not a bad motor - just got my cambelt done for £300 including tensioners (Genuine VX parts).

Auto box can sometimes make funny choices but it's a great cruiser. Also has tiptronic style selection on the box.

The V6 burble keeps a smile on your face.

I love mine. I will buy a newer one. So smooth to drive. more reliable than 1.9 engine vectra's.
