    Default x-box 360 help please

right then you gamer's / electrical wizard's out there luke has a problem with his x-box 360. basicaly it turn's on run's then makes a god awfull racket and then 2 red light's come on on the left hand side of the button, the warranty ran out in feb of this yr so microsoft want either £80.00 or £97.00 to fix it. if it was th 3 red light's it would be fixed for free and these symptom's deem it to be ''not a common fault'' apparantly, so question is has anyone else had / heard of this problem and if so is there a cheaper fix ????

    thank's in advance

2 Red lights means overheating, check the fans are running first.

could also explain the god awful racket if the fan is stuck or blocked by somethingI

f you do not have a warranty, you can repair your Xbox at home. The best option for a long-lived repair solution is to replace the thermal protective compound applied to the GPU and CPU chips. To do this, you will need to remove the hard drive and all peripherals. Next, you will need to remove the case, followed by the X-Clamps holding the heat sinks in place (the motherboard must be out of the case for this). Clean the thermal compound residue from the underside of the heat sinks, as well as from the top of the GPU and CPU chip. Replace the old compound with the correct thermal protective compound. Finally, you may consider modifying the X-clamp method to help dissipate heat more evenly. Reassemble the Xbox and you should have a functional console.

Rich, my daughter, Tanya works for Game Station and she reckons that the most common reason for two red lights is usually overheating. She says you can get a cooler from GS, they are a tenner or if you type 'tea towel' and 'xbox 360 overheating' into Google, there is suggestion which has supposedly worked for many people (she didn't say what it was though lol). HTH mate

EDIT: There was no replies to this when I started typing. Guess I'd get nowhere on Who wants to be a millionaire

Those external fans are not always a good idea as they have been known to suck in more crap and make the problem worse.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

I have seen many repair kits for the XBOX RROD on flea bay, most are under a tenner. Dont know how good these self repair kits are though, unless someone on here as used one.

I use them all the time for fixing the 3 red light problem, work great if you know what your doing.

The 2 red light error is something different, as has been said is likely to be a problem with the internal cooling fans.

he did the damp tea towel trick ages ago and that seemed to cure the then 3 light problem then, look's lik it is a overheating problem still and if i knew what the psu cpu gsu were i would have a look at fixing it myself...lol

i will remove the cover and look to see if there is anything obvious but that is about it for me, so it will more than likely be passed onto a mate over the weekend for his eye's and knoweledge to sort it out...

thank's again all who have replied....
