    Exclamation possible wastegate actuator problems

    afternoon all ....

    lovely weather for ducks today!!

as some of you may know i had a remap about 2 months ago now and love the difference to the performance ....but immediately following the remap i would intermittantly get a eml fault and the turbo would not run this hesitation can occur from 3rd gear to 6th gear for example....under harder acceleration in 3rd gear - steady acceleration in 4th or when you attempt to push on ..say 70 mph in 6th (2500rpm)and press the accelerator - but the fault is soooo intermittant it wont happen at the same place every time on the same journey some days i can drive to work with no problems and the next day eml will occur......weird but makes you think twice about attempting to make an overtake when the turbo COULD drop out at any moment....

the fault can be cleared by turning off the engine and restarting - car then drives perfectly normally - for a remap

diagnosed as fault code P0244 so as per previous threads and contact with other members with similar issues and great advice from the Darrell at Torquing bhp i ordered and replaced the solenoid valve - only to have the same issue

i contacted Darrell again and he thought the fault may be hard stored and hence why it was still present - and we arranged to have a another run and possible softer remap incase the solenoid valve was oversensitive...

this was completed and today (long delay owing to us both being fairly busy and today being the first availble time we could get together....we again went out only for the same fault to occur - have the same fault code stored as initially so thinking what else could it be.....
Darrell has suggested the Turbo wastegate (i would like to say Darrell has the patience of a saint and has been very helpful) to see if its sticking ....

but how can i test this ?? if it needs replacing there roughly £150 so would like to rule it out before i order one and find its not needed....

    possible turbo pressure sensor ???

hose leak - would have thought it would occur all the time and not intermittantly ?? cant hear anything obvious -

your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    so over to you

    please help

As it seems non of us have answers for you, might be worth posting on the saabscene forum as well - it is an engine developed by Saab after all and a lot of the bods over there have this engine. I found them to be a helpful bunch when I was looking for help with the solenoid valve issue.

FYI, the Saab boys don't call it a Z20NET, to them it's the B207L.

I'm sure it's not related, but it may give you another avenue to explore. I had very similar symptoms with mine a while back.

I don't know what the fault code was, as I didn't read it myself, but the problem was ignition module 1. This was damaged by myself while cleaning the engine bay (didn't cover the sensitive bits as well as I thought), and produced very similar symptoms to yours.

Dez, have you had any joy with your problems? Dont think it'll have anything to do with the airbox box as I've done that and had no problems. Could it be the barometer sensor? There about £15 from the dealers. Have you had VX tell you what P0244 fault code is?

My other car. 1972 1641cc slammed beetle. On the road finally!!

    Kev,

if it stopped raining long enough when it was light for me to have a look and check it would be great

the fault was as and is P0244 turbo/supercharge wastegate regualting solenoid /valve A range performance

which is why we replaced the solenoid valve - first as the cheapest (and in the other cases the resolving factor) -

i need to test my wastegate acuation - not sure if i can manually "move" it or try and feel if there is any resistance as you can only really do it by touch and preferably when its cold as trying to feel the movement with hot parts is painful - i might have to remove the turbo heatshield for a little better access - but its going to be sunday before i can attempt - again weather permitting -

ive been wating for a while - so a little longer wont hurt - but thanks for asking !

    i'll keep you posted

    regards

    Dez
