Full of useful information, thanks very much.

My garage man says the timing chain rattles like crazy, and I've noticed it a bit on starting, but now it does it all the time apparently. It looks like a big job to change it, but is it?

It is a big job to do as you also need to change all the chain guides, water pump, tensioners and balancer chain at the same time. Not had to do it myself as i always changed my oil every 5 - 6k and did a flush on every other one to clear the oil galleries......

Chains etc fitted at VX were £1200 a few years ago. However its a SAAB engine and their parts are cheaper.

Ouch! That doesn't sound much like fun, but if it needs to be done.........

    Thanks for the info nonetheless.

Looking at the pics in the Z20NET info pages it looks like an engine-out job as there's precious little clearance on the driver's side of the engine bay.

    This is totally bizarre!

After a gentle 120 mile drive to see some friends on Friday, when I headed back today the turbo's working again at full boost!!!!!

How the devil can that be happening?

bad connection on the wires or connector... just located the solenoid remove the cable and clean the contact points... an electrical cleaner and a small flat blade watch screwdriver are the tools you need... spray the contacts with the cleaner than scrape them, with the flat blade screw driver spray the contact cleaner again when done... let it dry and connect it up again... this should be enough to sort it out

VX do the chains etc in situ.. Id hate to think what they would charge to remove/replace engine.

You can get them done for much cheaper than £1200, that's for sure. Remember it's a Saab engine, so have a ring round a few specialists for a quote.

I had a startup rattle on mine last year, did an engine flush and oil change and it's been quiet as a mouse since. I do change the oil every 6000 miles now to keep things clean.

Im a firm believer in using an engine flush. My original 2t has 90k on it and has had 6 monthly engine flush/oil and filter for last 60k and still like a switch watch.

New 2t gets same treatment. It came with ****ed chains etc and was done under Network Q warrenty.
