    Default Brakes

    Hi all

Wife just informed me that the brake pad warning light has just come on, we are away in devon for half term next week, we will do approx 500 miles that week. Will the pads be ok for this mileage? i will get them and the discs replaced as soon as i return.

simple answer - the car is telling you that the brakes are wearing out.....

or that there could be a break in the pad wear indicator is only on one side of the pads (so the pads might have worn unevenly and may be metal to metal on one side)

your car will be fully loaded with all of your luggage - your wife and your children .....so heavier than normal.... you may have to stop fast in the case of an emergency - plenty of nasty accidents on the roads that way nearly every day - would you really want to risk all of that for the sake of maybe £30-50 ???

if it was me - i would not be waiting .... i would at least take it to a garage for a freehealth & saftey check to ensure its all ok before driving in excess of 500 miles

and then if they say - pads are ok for .....miles - you have a general idea

but imho brakes and tyres at this time of year are what are keeping you on the road - rather than off it -get them done now

0-Large smile ......every time it's driven

Think thats not the best advise a mechanic could give.

As above the light is telling you, you have no pads left, and carrying your family in the car on a motorway when you know this information is imo very neglegent.

you might just have a ck of your brakes lunchtime ,the brake sensor does give you a bit of notice ,but as said it could be badly worn elsewhere, also your discs might not need changing have you ck those recently ??

If you know what you're doing you can change your brake pads within an hour easy. Do your discs really need changing to?

I've managed to release and clean up a seized calliper at work, however now I'm office based I wouldn't be able to do it again. But pads I could for sure, and it is a "health & safety" matter....

Good point Ian. Warning light comes on at 3mm remaining, which theoretically means you should be alright for a while....but you never know.

Exactly, 3mm remaining on the pad with the sensor, but that caliper could be sticking and the inside pad may have next to nothing
