Default Mechanical, electrical, aternator or a mix of them all? Problem with the Vectra

Not totally suprising really, I own a Vectra estate 1.9 CDTi 150, and it had a bit fo a catastrophic functioning failure last night.

Not sure where to start really.

A week ago I returned from the garage to have my rear upper suspension arms replaced. When i pulled into my drive, white/grey smoke was coming from the back of the car. Imediately stopped, checked car, went for another tentative run, but nothing.

Last night, taking the girlfrind back to the train station, noticed white smoke again comig from back of the car (presumably exhaust?). While waiting at traffic lights the engine idle had increased from it's usual static 800rpm to varrying between 1100-1200rpm(estimated).

Needing to catch the train and also, then i could deal with this problem without worrying about her, decided to risk the last 0.5 miles.

Shortly after this smoke, I turned the radio off, engine was sounding slightly harsher than usual, not as smooth. (turbo still functioning)

Quickly followed by the ABS and TC light appearing, then very quickly the power steering went.

Limping to the side of the road, got the car safely off the main road. Using the onboard computer, checked the battery voltage, was down to 11v.

Abbandoning the train station I got my dad to come out and follow me home, just in case i needed a tow or anything worse. (put the gf with the dad just to keep her safe)

Got to the driveway again, no smoke all journey, engine still sounding rough, battery light on all way home, but sitting in the driveway with the engine still running, volts increased to about 11.6v before i shut her down.

Using my mothers car to catch the train again, had to move my car this morning, power steering failed again backing my car out, no smoke though.

My query is; 'is this as simple as the alternator. Not sure why the lack of electrical power would induce smoke and an increase in engine rpm?'

I have been reading various threads all morning, but this mix of mechanical and electrical problems thought that it might be a new case, so thought a new thread would be appropriate?

    Thank you guys.

Hi. Could just be your auxillary drive belt is slipping or snapped. That would make the alternator light come on and your power steering would also stop as they are both driven by this belt. The smoke could just be from the belt if it has snapped and rubbing up against something. But I would have thought you would smell burning rubber.

There is indeed a distinctive, non diesel smell, almost rubbery actually.

You may well be onto something...

    Thank you
