I use Meguire's Deep Chrystal Polish and it does the job for me. I follow it up with a glaze (Meguire's #21) then a decent wax, just tried Poorboy's Natty Blue for the first time and it rocks!

Clayed, megs stage 2 polish and stage 3 waxed my star silver a couple of weeks back, wow what a difference. Cant comment on the autoglym but as of the shelf stuff goes the megs stuff is damn good.

It is a bar of putty type stuff, basically it pulls contaminents out of the clearcoat on the paintwork that you can't get out through washing.

Best way to see if you need to clay is put your finger in a bit of cellophane (fag packet wrapper) and run it along the paintwork, if it feels like sandpaper then you should think about claying.

It's amazing the finish you can acheive with smooth paintwork and you'd be suprised at how much **** the clay gets off.

Edit: You clay in between washing and polishing stages.

Halfrauds do a Meguire's Quick Clay kit for about £12, this also contains a spray bottle of Quick Detailer which you use to lubricate the clay, spray a little on the paint, rub over with the clay and wipe off the excess detailer and the rubbish it gets out. Every few rubs fold the clay and re-shape it so the dirt gets absorbed into the bar.

Very safe, will not damage paintwork

Also, the quick detail spray you get with it can be used for all sorts of cleaning jobs around the car, great for a quick spruce up at a meet or show etc..
