Default swirl valve rod..problem on my 56 reg 1.9cdti or not??

Have seen loads of threads about swirl valve and inlet manifold problems and bearing in mind I'm not really mechanically minded what age of vectras does this affect? Will my 56 plate 1.9cdti 150 be affected? When was the part modified? If mine could be affected where do I actually look for this linkage bar when standing in front of the car??

Ok so looked at this today and the swirl bar is still in place but

    1. Looks thick of oil and crud where it is joined
    2. I think if you look at it hard enough it would fall off in front of your very eyes
    3. It is able to be moved by hand in a rocking motion but also tried lifting it at one end and it liftes up by a few mm very easily. Is there some range of upwards movement before you get some resistance or should it be tight. Don't want to move it any more in case it pops off.
    4. When the engine revs it moves but seems a bit jerky. Imagined it would be nice and smooth action.

    Any thoughts.....

I think it can be an issue on a 56 plate CDTi.

It should be nice and smooth, and to be honest the crud build up is the start of the problem, it will build to a point where the swirls stick and this is what pops the bar off.

BALLS . I have read the threads about the cheap fixes but is it worthwhile taking the linkage off and cleaning everything down and then refitting? Is is a complete nightmare refitting the bar??

If its still attached don't take it off, leave it be till it does fall off then look at the options. I'm not sure that the cheap fixes work all that well to be honest, but with the price difference its probably certainly worth a go.

Should it be snugly fitted? I can certainly lift it at one end by a good few mm or is this tolerance normal? Performance is OK and not really noticed anything sluggish other than below 1800rpm but that is normal for the 150.
The car is out of warranty now but I have taken AA breakdown repair cover so if it did come off and EML came on I would just ring them and take it from there

They are not dead tight, but shouldn't move much. I have had a new inlet manifold fitted to mine (there is new design to reduce the crud build up) and it picks up from 1200rpm now.

If the bar popped off would the EML come on? How much (dealer prices) are you looking at to replace everything because you need a new EGR valve as well don't you? I have a £500 limit to any claim with AA. God, talk about looking on the black side.......my glass is definitely half empty today

Not necessarily no. My EML never came on and the bar was off, I only checked due to a massive power loss.

Dealer prices vary, some have it as a 4.5 hour job, others longer. Parts are about £300 and then the labour on top. - you don't necessarily need a new EGR, but chances are it will be full of crud too.

I had mine done all in (with new EGR) for £800 at my local indy garage.
