Default Vibrating from NS front when braking.

    Hi guys (and gals obviously),

for last few months I've been getting a vibration from the ns front brake for the last few yards when braking, (easiest to describe it as like when you spin a spinning top too fast that sort of sound/vibration). The car has just passed MOT last week, Kwik fit have done a brake check and can't find a fault and I have stripped down completely and all looks ok, disk isnt warp'd pads good thickness etc. Kwik fit suggested it just the friction material on the pads but it doesnt seem to be that kind of noise and vibration. apart from the noise and vibration felt through the car cant feel anything through steering and no pulling etc.

I have been thinking along lines of wheel bearing starting to fail but seemed ok when checked it and obviously not picked up on MOT

    Any suggestions?????

    Chris

you say they have inspected the brakes is there any signs of surface corrosion or "scabbing" on the inner edges of the discs ?? any lipping on the outer edges? a disc skim may help with the noises

    Cheers Dez,

The disks were fitted new with the pads (main dealer) when i got the car 2 year ago there still loads of material left and no sign of anything untoward on the disk, closest I can find is the outer pad has a fine crack in the friction material running across the centre section which when fitted would be at right angles to the disk rotation.

New pads and discs aren't that expensive, probably worth a shot as it sounds like a warped disc whatever the Kwik Fit monkeys say.....

And of course K Fit used a DTI gauge to measure any run out? Hmmmm....

This isn't a dig at the OP but unless people are any the wiser, high street/national tyre places are the first call. Armed with a bit more info (from the forum), things generally turn out OK.

As to what the problem is, it could be several things, some of which are mentioned above. Could also be the caliper piston not retracting correectly, pads not sitting properly, sticking caliper slide bolts etc..

Piston retracts ok, sliders are fine, pads fitted correctly, no sign of runout on disks (although not used a gauge to measure, there no sign of grabbing when the wheel is spun and the brakes lightly applied) would expect the noise to be there every time. what I forgot to mention (so my apologies to you all) is that the noise does not occur every time I brake, on that basis I would not expect it to be a warped disk.

As for using Kwik fit, they were the last resort after I had stripped the offending caliper down lol figured if there was a problem they would want the business (new discs and pads was about £150 i think lol). and so if the disk was warped would have thought they would have spotted this lol.

Could it just be gas building up in the afore mentioned crack in the friction material? (never encountered this with other vehicles tho.)
