if you traded it to a reputable garage/main dealer they run through VMC (vehicle milage checker)
this compnay will contact the previous keeper to ask the mileage on trade in then they will confirm this to the new garage (helps protect the new buyer)
generally the vehicle will have on the odometer display one of 2 stickers at the garage:-

    vehicle mileage awaiting verification
    vehicle mileage verified

if they cant verify the milage the car then normally gets shipped to an auction

If in doubt check companies house for the company details, to see that the company number matches the address
If they do then respond, if not then either destroy or pass to Trading Standards
Equally, you may want to contact the trader that took the car from you

Personally I would also only respond if they supplied a paid envelope

I've owned loads of cars and NEVER had any requests for mileage verification
However, they have all been between 3 and 6 years old, with between 120K and 150K miles

Mileage verification is of more benefit where the mileage is low, there are possible gaps or discrepancies in service and MoT

Well it doesn't ask for any personal details, just details of milage when I bought, sold where I bought it from who I sold it to etc, if it helps fraud and seems legit I suppose I'll send it off, cheers guys

I had one a few days ago from Experian, asking for milage details etc of my old 13-week old Insignia car I sold about 6 weeks ago. Nothing really personal on the form and they supplied a pre-paid return envelope, so why not, if it helps to cut car clocking.
