Default How long can I leave the ignition on and engine off?

    Hi all,

Something that I've never been quite sure of is whether I can leave the ignition in the on position with all of the warning lights showing for a long period? I vaguely remember some kind of scare story from my dad when I was little about some kind of coil burning out.

The reason I ask is that my parrot handsfree kit (with ipod adapter) is wired into the cigarette lighter, which only comes on when I have the ignition key in the "ready to start" position. Sometimes I want to sit in the car and listen to the ipod when I'm waiting to pick someone up etc.

I can hear a whirring noise from the back - the fuel pump? Is there any reason not to? I've got the CDTi engine but I'd be interested to know about the petrol one too!

    Thanks in advance,

    Dave

As long as u want2,those days r gone were u could burn the coil out.If u leave the ignition on 4 2long the power to the coil pack is shut down.Only concerns r how good is your battery. As a general guide thou remember power is still at the ignition barell n a few other components,so common sense is the answer...

Thanks! Sounds reasonable. Yeah - probably wouldn't do it for more than 20 mins or so anyway. :-)

several manufacturers have now fitted a "back up" to prevent the vehicle from having its battery drained on "stage2"of the key cycle
whereby the vehicle will go into economy mode to ensure there is sufficient power left to start the car - some of these only allow 15-20 minutes of use before this cuts in - its dependant on how long the car has been driven and how much charge is left in the battery

but as its been said - sensible use and you will be fine

I fitted a permanent live from the rear appliance socket to the fuse box in the boot, quick, easy and cheap fix. There is a thread and how to on here somewhere.

Since it is a diesel you have, you can leave the ignition on for as long as you want
Absoloutely no danger of burning the coil out, there isn't one to burn out
The only main power drains would be the glowplugs, air con / heater motor, and lights
After about 10 minutes the glowplugs may reset, but that usually only happens when it is VERY cold
The headlights will come on when you first start the car, but when you switch the engine off they should go off, otherwise you can simply turn them off
Some models have auto off lights, like mine after 5 minutes with the key out of the car ALL the lights go off

Yes - my old picasso turned everything off after about half an hour. I don't like the look of the lights but I'll play my music without worrying now!

    Thanks all...

The Vectra C doesn't switch off at all, now that I remember
I fell asleep with the radio on, a window open, and the key in the ignition
Awoke about 4 hours later and the radio was still on

The previous Mondeo I had would switch off after 60 minutes, I remember that happening a few times

That will happen in the vec, but only if the radio is turned on with the key off iirc.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

On my facelift if you leave the radio on with the ignition off then the radio only stays on for approx 10 minutes.
Also if you accidently leave any of the interior lights switched on then the car switches them off after a preset time.So no coming down to the car in the morning with a flat battery.
