I doubt it that somethig hit you. Is the hole at the front, I presume it is. By the sound of what you say it sounds like a con rod has come through the engine block. But without eiter seeing the damage or any picturs I can not substantiate this. Is it possible to post up a photo. I must admit I have not heard of a "hole" appearing in the engine block for many many years.
Again wothout futher info" it goes sound a bit like mechanical faliure some where.

yes, i would say something inside has "punched" a hole though the block. my old vec did the same but to the gearbox. sorry to say it, its going to be an expensive time for you.
on another matter why did it take the AA 2 hours to arrive ? (do they not guarantee to be with you within 40mins ?) is the car at home or at a garage ?

If there is a hole in the engine block, you will need to remove the engine a new block will be needed. then all the top end will need to be removed and refitted to the replacement block. It probably will in the end work out cheaper to get a replacement engine. I would have a look on ebay, just in case, to give you a rough idea of some of the cost.

this happened to my brother's Fiat Coupe. Conrod ejected itself through the engine block. He ended up buying a new engine.

your oil wanring light was probably pointing at low oil/pressure problems the car continiued to drive without sufficient lubrication and something has got very very hot and siezed = resulting in the engine letting go

i'm sure this is not what you needed to hear - but it is sounding like a new engine - was everything else ok before - no noises or other issues??
not leaking oil - havent had to keep topping it up ??

0-Large smile ......every time it's driven
