    Default Double Glazing Query

    Hi,

I had new double glazing installed 7 years ago (wood grain UPVC), recently a double glazed unit at the rear of my house failed (misted) and one on my front bay window started to mist.

Called the installers (who are still in business !) - They finally came round to replace the double glazed units.

The fitter noticed that the actual frame on my front bays seems to have buckled, so that the double glazed unit doesn't sit flat in the frame now .. there was a similar observation on the first floor bay windows.

Now I am concerned .... seems like the frames have changed shape and may have caused the double glazed units to fail.

Can anyone please advice on causes and what to do next please?

    Thanks

dont understand that mate ! is there a load on top of them ? as this would cause the frame to distort.

Not that I know anything about double glazing but it kind of sounds to me like it could be down to the way they were fitted ???

    Hi, thanks for replies

Seems like the supporting pilars in the bay windows are taking most of the weight of the bay but possibly distorting the frame. The brown UPVC frames absorb quite a bit of energy in the day and evening sun ....

Hope the company come back out to rectify, just been on a recce up and down the road - a few other houses have the same phenomena I think.

Any suggestions on how to take this forward with the company, it's been 7 years since they were installed now?

how long is your guarantee mate? it would appear that they are carryingv the weight of above, and if thats the case it will keep happening and would think that removal of internal finishes at lintol will reveal if my theories aere correct

I don't think the bays have lintels, our houses were built in 1930's

Worst case scenario is you may have some settlement starting. Have you noticed any cracks in the walls? are your doors still closing properly or are they now jamming etc
Any cracks internally on the plaster?

Even in the 1930's houses had lintols, most likely stone or timber and can fail, but unlikely.

It could be as you are thinking, and the constant heating up and cooling down has caused them to distort.

Is it the whole frame or just the metal inside the frame. On a really hot day I can see this buckle on our windows, but goes back on a colder day / night. Perhaps its this that has buckled?
