there is a procedure to do it right.... you reset the self adjusting spring by pushing it all the way in, than you do the work on the calipers (as you've slackened the tension from the cables to the rear calipers) the handbrake cable is now easier to remove and to put back on. Than you go into the car pump the brake pedal 3 times (car doesn't need to be running) than you pull up the handle, you'll notice the first pull will be high, release and return the handle (to it's resting position)than repeat it 3 times... it should be fine after that... you can mess with the stuff in back of the handle but all that does is put more tension on the cable to the calipers, as you are shortening the cable travel under the car, not the travel of the handle.
