Not particularly high mileage, and no significant reported problems on the 1.8 either. Do a quick forum search and you'll see lots on the 1.9cdti, but not a great deal on the 1.8 and 2.0T petrol engines.
Out of interest, have you thought about going for the 2.0T instead? I can't imagine the running costs are significantly different, and the 1.8 can feel (in my opinion) a little sluggish sometimes...

Average of 17k miles per year, which although over the average isnt too bad.
But i believe the cambelt will be due at 60k, unless they altered it for the VVT's, on the 1.8 ECOTEC it was 5yrs or 60k

i have a habit of putting foot down as usually running late for work lol.
not a lot of 2.0T going around up here in my price range.
got the 1.9 cdti 120 at present and so much seems to be going wrong with it so maybe reverting back to petrol.

I have recently purchased a 2006 1.8 VVTi with 100,000 on the clock and due to that sort of mileage I had the cambelt changed along with a basic service. All in, it cost £290.00 but I also had the aircon re-gassed at the same time.

However, I am currently having a few problems with it juddering at low speed in 1st gear and the lights flicker on the dash and headlights when turning the steering wheel when on tick over. Apparently though these are common issues and it’s a case of put up or cough up!!!!! I have been told it could be my clutch that is making it judder and I would need to replace it along with the fly wheel to sort it out and it could cost over £1000.

So from me it’s going to be a ‘Put Up’ as i have not got that sort of cash spare.

    Hope this helps,

P.S it’s a really nice car though, my 3rd Veccy.

if its the right price buy it, tip,, check the discs, I had to change mine at 57,000, also check the springs, and as has been said its getting due for a cam belt/water pump etc at 60,000 miles, they can feel a bit sluggish say,, on an A road if you want to overtake somthing sitting at 50mph, but all in all my VEC is just what I want out of a car at the moment. buy the way,, I sold my first vec with 178,000 miles on the clock and it was still running ok.
