I took mine in recently for noise from rear brakes, they told me that there was nothing wrong with it , it's just a charcteristic of the car, and get this, they said its because of the big gaps in the alloys, dirt gets onto the discs/pads. I mean big gaps in the alloys on a GSi??

I had a back brake noise and they told me i needed new discs, pads and calipers!! Bout £650 quids worth. It turned out to be that some drongo hadn't fitted the pads properly (not clipped em to the pistons). Took my local garage bout 30 seconds to realise the problem. Fixed it free of charge. I later found out that the TIS advises to replace everything if the customer complains of noisy breaks!

I've been told it's due to the pads not having asbestos these days. Why the rears only do it, and not the fronts, I don't know.

    Depends,

if they fit VX pads then possibly..Aftermarket one's don't give so much noise..

Personally, i've grown so used to it, it doesn't bother me now..

Interestingly, I've just had to replace the rear pads on my Signum. They were 90% worn at the service.
The fronts still have 20k left in them!
How can it be that the rears wear out in 40k, the fronts in 60k?
I'd have thought the fronts would be working harder, especially on an auto.

Dosen`t stop it though.Had new discs pads all round (warranty) and still rear brakes make that minor noise.
Have been told it`s make up of pads etc that make them noisey too.
