confused Cars booked in for investigations !

I've noticed over the last few weeks that there was a certain amount of 'play' creaping in with my steering. There is about 4-5mm of movement in the steering wheel when turned side to side before i can feel any resistance.
The car has started to steer itself so i suspect its either the rack or track rod ends have started to wear at less than 24000 miles and 2 1/2 years old.
Its quite un-nerving aswell when you brake hard, as the car changes direction slightly with no movement on the steering wheel.

I'll await the outcome of the investigations......

me too but have changed all the droplinks and trackrod ends etc and it still sometimes steers itself but have been told its the profile of the tyres that makes it does that

yip - lower profile tyres will certainly make it tramline - i.e. follow groves in the road etc - my 18" wheels on the saab were terrible for that.

Actual play in the steering wheel tho i.e. you turn the wheel a cm etc without it doing anything normally means a worn rack.

Mine wanders when my tyre pressures are even slightly down...3 or 4 lb or so....
But then again I have granny clampet standard 16" alloys.
I would have thought low profiles would be less susceptible to vagueness / wandering.

Try looking at the pinch bolt that holds the bottom of the steering
column to the rack spline, mine came loose and gave me about 4-5 mm
of play in the steering wheel ! the teq just tightened it back up.

Mine was like that, had wear in the UJ where it enters the steering rack.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
