Default Rear brake pad wear - a warning !!

    Dear All,

I have a 2008 Vec 1.8 Design with 28k miles. Recently there was a slight grinding from the rear brakes when braking slowly eg. around town. Took the car to my local main dealer who test drove it but could hear nothing. I asked them to check further so they put the car up on a ramp and checked the brakes by looking through the wheel spokes with a torch.

The outside offside pad had about 8mm of material showing so they said all was ok. I said that it felt like it was the inside pad (don't know how i knew, i just did). On removing the wheel, the inside pad was WORN TO THE BACKING METAL on the leading edge. New pads were fitted at a cost of around £29 + 1/2 an hour of labour at around £31. (It should have been an hour of labour).

All is now well, however, i have never known rear pads to wear before the front. My fronts are barely half worn. I know the hand brake operates on the inner pad but this was working ok and the caliper was free to move, wound back in ok and was not seized in any way.

Might be worth checking your own car if you have the same symptoms.

Fairly common on the vecs for the rears to wear before the fronts. Still, a good reminder

Did you change the disks too as it sounds like your post that they could be damaged
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Hello and thanks for the quick reply. The discs were fine, hardly any wear and very little scoring.

Blimey! Coincidence or what. Just had to do the same to my 7 month old/14,500 mile veccy estate. Three rear pads perfect, inside one on passenger side down to bare metal. Just avoided new disks as well, apparently. According to the nice man at my local National Tyres, it's a regular thing with Vectras AND Insignias.

Typical life of the rear brake pads is just 18 months / 30K miles

However uneven wear, like you mention, suggests an issue
Quite possibly the caliper on that side has seized as this is quite common in this design where the caliper is shared between handbrake and footbrake

That's a good price for OEM brake pads and fitting though, even if it is the normal 1 hours labour
There were loads of complaints about premature wear on the Vectra B, with the rear pads costing nearly £80 fitted, and it looks like VX have seen sense with the prices on brake pads for the Vectra C (almost the same as for fast fit centres)

I had exactly the same issue, it even passed the MoT with it. I was assured by the dealer that it was just a bit of grit!!!

The warning light is only connected to the front pads on the assumption that they will wear out first. It wasn't until I got quite nasty with them that they got a mechanic to check it with me, and surprise surprise!

A side effect was that the backing plate had shed hot metal and it was baked on to the one alloy. Had to end up having them all refurbished.
