Ok, your computer (however small) runs in the momry. This is also known as RAM, and these days about 2GB is normal, although yours is probably smaller (1GB, 512 MB etc). All the computer programs run in this memory as it's much faster than the hard drive the programs are actually stored on. It's similar in construction to the SD cards that you put in your camera...

If you have a lot of programs running, the computer will run out of memory and start slowing down, as it has to constantly move programs in and out of memory to and from the hard drive to be able to run. In these situations, it uses a part of the hard drive itself as memory, and this is known as Virtual Memory. Unfortunately, it runs about 100-1000 times slower than proper RAM...

If you've run out of that, then you've either got some serious amount of programs running, or a virus of some sort is causing taking it all up by running in the backround..

Good news is, you can increase the amount of space it is allocated on the hard drive. A quick google will tell you how for your operating system. I'd find it myself, bu tea's ready...

What O/S is it running? Windows XP or Windows Vista??

Windows Vista has a service called Superfetch which has been known to take a lot of memory up that is doesn't need to as it caches what it thinks are programs you will use into memory before you actually use them. I normally disable this on Vista.

i know where all looking at the technical side of the problems -but as a simple solution wasnt there an option on XP whereby if you plugged in a memory stick that it could use it as memory for the computer? this would then add to the memory and allow Ian to free up some "virtual Memory" and carry on surfing
